Build Your Teen's Courage Playlist

Build Your Teen's Courage Playlist

Music is such an important part of our lives. From "Happy Birthday" to "Pomp and Circumstance", music is the soundtrack to our lives - especially during our teen years!

Here's how you and your daughter can build your teen's courage playlist to help her BE BOLD!

What was the first tape or CD you ever bought? Mine was Ace of Base’s The Sign. Remember that gem? The songs on that album never failed to lift my spirits when I was feeling down or angsty. Music forms a powerful connection with our emotions, and as sentient (having the ability to perceive/feel) beings, music can reach us during pretty much any of the highs and lows in our lives. As teenagers, feelings can be much more intense and cycle through with greater frequency (a.k.a mood swings). Not only that, but teenagers are still developing their sense of selves and how to navigate important and sometimes stressful/scary situations.

We've talked here before about tools that your teen daughters can use during these trying years and today we want to introduce one more: the Courage Playlist. Do you have any songs that pump you up and get you ready for an intimidating situation?

Think Michael Phelps in the 2016 Olympics right before he swam each of those record-breaking races...he had his headphones on, eyes closed, and was visibly psyching himself up for the race ahead. A courage playlist is a collection of songs that invoke your badass brave selves and help you to tackle those things that you have been avoiding out of fear. Some of my songs include India Arie's "Slow Down", Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger", and Destiny's Child "Survivor".

Anxiety is unfortunately all too common with the teenage girls I see every week; they harbor fear of social situations, speaking in front of a class, taking tests, trying new things, getting a job, etc.

They have amazing aspirations yet their fears sometimes keep them from going after their dreams. And as small as the Courage Playlist tool may seem, it can be powerful in helping them overcome the fears that are holding them back. So, take a few minutes today to sit down with your daughter and ask her what those songs are that make her feel powerful and strong. Share with her some of your favorite songs and together you'll have a playlist that you can turn to whenever you need a boost of courage!

Alina is passionate about helping teen girls navigate through their high school years with peace and courage. She leads our BE BOLD Movement to help teens build these skills. Sign up for this exclusive event by calling 813-434-3639.
